Mazes were often found in large Victorian gardens. A maze would consist of a series of passages formed by pruned cypress hedges. Marks refered to this maze in his letters.

The maze at Zwartkoppies has typical pruned hedges, but its design is not complicated and actually leads one to the central feature, the flag-pole garden. Between the maze and the house is a small orange-grove. The trees are planted in a V-shape with a bed of roses in the centre.
