Rooi Rose 30 April 1997 |
Home entertainment was the chief source of amusement in the Victorian period. A favourite pastime was croquet. In later years lawn-tennis became more popular than croquet. At Zwartkoppies Marks had a lawn tennis-court made. In 1903 a new clay court was built next to the entrance road on the northern side of the property. The lawn court was then converted into a croquet court. A pergola of vines surrounds the croquet court. The summer-house, which was used for teas, is covered by the Mermaid rose, dating from 1918. The light cream canna bed and oleanders have been replanted as they were in the early twentieth century.
