1880 - Zuid-Afrikaansche en Oranje Vrijstaatsche Kolen en Mineralen Mijn Vereeniging (converted to Vereeniging Estates

          in 1897).

1880-81 - Opening of Du Toitspan diamond mine - leads to revitalising of Kimberley Mining Company.

1882-83 - Eerste Fabrieken Hatherley Distillery (Company founded in 1882, factory opened in 1883).

1890   - Vereeniging Brick and Tile Company (Converted later to Vereeniging Refractories).

1894   - Vereeniging Milling Company (Later Vereeniging Consolidated Mills).

1894   - Swaziland Corporation.

1895   - South African Republic Fruit and Meat Preserving Works, Hatherley.

1896   - (Pretoria?) Glass Works, Hatherley.

1904   - African and European Investment Co. Ltd., taken over by Anglo American, 1945.

1905   - Robert Victor Diamond Mine (Sold to De Beers, 1913).

1911   - Union Steel Company (now USCO).

 

His many coal interests were consolidated in 1936 as Amalgamated Collieries of South Africa Limited.

 

Shares in Companies:

 

1877   - Kimberley Mining Company founded in conjunction with the Paddon Brothers.

1879   - Above company joined up with Jules Porges and became the Compagnie Francaise des Mines du Diamants du

            Cap  - the French Company. (First South African diamond company opened for European investment)

1880   - Sold most of his shares in the French Company.

1886   - Acquired shares in Sheba gold mine, Barberton. Gradually increased percentage of shareholding to become the

            biggest shareholder at the end of the decade.

1893-94  - Bought a 50% share of the Irene Estates of the deceased Nellmapius, Rand Mines the other half. Sold to

                Bertie van der Bijl in 1920.

1894   - South African United Breweries.

1896   - Bought ten founder’s shares in De Eerste Zuidelike Nationale Bank (Founded 1891).

1899   - Bought four founder’s shares in  De Eerste Zuidelike Nationale Bank.

1902   - Imperial Cold Storage is founded with Barnato-JCI and De Beers, today known as J.C.S.

1906   - Victoria Falls Power Company (Became Vereeniging Power Station; started production in 1912)

 

According to M Robertson, Marks was also interested in cement and diamond concessions of Eduart Lippert.

 

Appointments:

 

1905  - Honorary lifelong president of the Pretoria Jewish Congregation.

1910  - Senator of the Union Parliament.

1911  - Vice-president of the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society.
