Why a World Hornbill Network?

Most hornbills are large and conspicuous birds that inhabit Africa and Asia or appear in live exhibits around the world, such as zoos and theme parks. The conservation status of a number of species is vulnerable, threatened or endangered, yet in many habitats they serve an important ecological role as predators of animals or dispersers of seeds. Many people, from primitive rural societies or modern urban communities, are impressed by hornbills and consider them as important flagships for conservation of the wilderness areas and other wild animals where they occur.

The World Hornbill Network is an attempt to link as many people as possible, from all around the world, who share a common interest in hornbills – that family of birds that belong in the Class Aves, Order Coraciiformes and family Bucerotidae. The intention is to link and enhance all existing hornbill organisations, such as the Hornbill Specialist Group of Birdlife International, the Hornbill Research Foundation based in Thailand, the Ground Hornbill Project in South Africa, the Hornbill Group of the American Association of Zoos, Aquaria and Parks and the Hornbill Taxon Advisory Group of the European Union. It does not intend, in any way, to compete with or control any of these or other hornbill groups or individuals, but it does hope to facilitate all of their operations.
