A Group Portrait from 9 South African Families Open from 1 April 2004 |
This exhibition was displayed in the Tropen Museum, The Netherlands in 2002 / 2003. Nine ordinary South African families with profoundly different lives are introduced in this exhibition: Each family, generation, individual, bear the stamp of the extra-ordinary country they are living in. The following families represent their history over five generations: The Mthethwa, Nunn, Rathebe, Plaatjie, Steyn, Le Fleur, Manuel, Galada and Juggernauth families. One person takes centre-stage for each generation and in each family it's a teenager who starts. Each presenter shows a selection of photos and objects that recall special memories and tell about their lives. These stories start in the present and gradually reach back further in the past. Artworks and objects of the different families are also on display. Nine teams of photographers and artists spent time with the families and got together to portray their lives. |
