 GIANT CARPENTER BEE

Like most bees but unlike the Apidae, for example Honeybees and Bumble Bees, they do NOT make honey but provide their young with a relatively dry mixture of pollen and nectar. The nature of their nests, burrows excavated by themselves in dry plant tissue, is also of interest.

Giant Carpenter Bee, Xylocopa flavorufa, Order Hymenoptera

This is probably the most widespread of our large bees. Carpenter bees are important pollinators of indigenous and also crop plants. They are NOT Bumble Bees as is popularly believed in this country. Carpenter bees are capable of stinging.

Xylocopa flavorufa may measure up to 30 mm in length with a wingspan of up to 63mm. This species was selected because it is often seen but not well understood.
