Bushveld Lizard (Heliobolus lugubris)

Ground Beetles are generally carnivorous and group-preferring species. Many terrestrial groups have lost their wings and they are diurnal. The Bushveld lizard mimics the Anthia beetle. The hatchling lizard walks stiffly and jerkily and has an unusual colour pattern resembling the distasteful Anthia beetle that squirts an acidic pungent fluid when threatened. It is probable that this mimicry protects the hatchling lizards from predators.
