Toktokkies / mealworms (Tenebrionidae)

Toktokkies are known for the tapping of their abdomen against the ground. This is done to attract the attention of a mate. These beetles are scavengers and will feed on any dead or decaying vegetation matter. Some mealworm larvae become serious pests in stored grain. The larvae of these beetles are often used as food for small predatory animals and fish in zoos. The larvae of the tenebrionids live in the soil and feed on the roots of grasses. They can also become serious pests in maize, wheat and barley fields.
