Distribution: Sierre Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Sudna, Kenya, Gabon, Angola, Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda.

Status:

Habitat: Dense undergrowth in primary and secondary forest and riverine forest.

General habits: Not highly social, found in pairs or family groups which feed and roost together. This barbet is difficult to see as it often perches quietly.

Feeding habits: Forages quietly in fruit trees and bushes. Also decends to the ground for snails and termites. Food consists of figs, avocados, berries, snails and insects.

Breeding habits: Sometimes nests in association with Grey-throated Barbets in forests. They are strongly territorial.
Egg laying: Varies with region.
Nest: The cavity is excavated by both adults and is 2 - 8m high in a dead tree or stump, or dead stub of a live tree. Their nests can sometimes be found among Grey-throated Barbet nests. Its has been reported that they also use old woodpecker holes.
Eggs: 2 - 4 white eggs are laid
Incubation:
Young: The nestlings are noisy. They are fed fruit and occasionally invertebrates by both adults. Adults also remove faecal matter.
