Distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa (extreme east). Disjunct distribution.

Status: Endemic resident, fairly common in restricted range

Habitat: Evergreen forest and dense woodland.

General habits: Frequents canopy of large trees. Singly or in pairs. Inconspicuous except when singing. Four or more may roost in the same hole.

Feeding habits: Often forages in groups, including mixed-species foraging flocks, in fruit trees. Diet of fruits, insects and slugs. Regurgitates insect hardparts and fruit stones.

Breeding habits: Breeds in diverse forest and woodland sites. Pairs frequently sing simultaneously.
Egg laying: October to December/January
Nest: Hole excavated by both sexes 7-10 meters above the ground in dead trunk or branch.
Eggs: 3-6
Incubation: Period unknown. Both adults incubate. Also recorded to sing continuously from inside the nesting cavity!
Young: Nestlings are fed by parents and helpers. They leave the nest after approximately 30 days.
