Distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Angola and South Africa (confined to the extreme east)

Status: Locally common resident

Habitat: Coastal evergreen forest and wet woodland

General habits: Frequents large trees in pairs or small groups. Communal roosting with up to eleven birds in one hole.

Feeding habits: Forages in trees and vines for fruit. Also hawks insects. May join mixed-species foraging flocks.

Breeding habits: Nests in dead trees.
Egg laying: October to January
Nest: Hole in well-rotted stumps of dead trees, excavated by both sexes.
Eggs: 2-6
Incubation: Estimated to be 14-18 days. Incubation by both parents as well as helpers.
Young: Fed by both parents and helpers. Main food is insects. Larger insects are dismembered before feeding to young. Faecal sac frequently removed. Fledgling period 39 days.
