General habits: Rather quiet and inconspicuous, but active in groups. Attacks other birds, especially other barbet species. Groups of up to six feed and roost together. Drinks water from lichen 'cups' on trees.

Feeding habits: Feeds at all levels and on ground. Probes lichens and mosses on trees. Often flycatches. Diet consists of insects, figs and berries.

Breeding habits: Groups of up to six including helpers nest in woodland and clearings. They aggessively chase away other barbet species from near the nest area.

Young: Fed by all adults. Large insects are first broken before fed to young. Faecal material is removed by one or more adults.
