Distribution: Sudan, Ethopia, Somalia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Swaziland, South Africa (Mpumalanga, Kwazulu-Natal to Eastern Cape)

Status: Common resident

Habitat: Acacia and other woodland, coastal and riverine forests, scrublands, in southern Africa evergreen forest and moist woodland.

General habits: Usually solitary. Perches high on a tree when calling.

Feeding habits: Feeds on bark and branches, sometimes tapping like a woodpecker. Hawks insects from a perch. Diet consists of fruit, especially mistletoe, insects.

Breeding habits: Monogamous and territorial, with very large territories.
Egg laying: October - December
Nest: Hole excavated in a dead trunk or underside of a branch. Picture of P. pusillus at the nest.
Eggs: 2-4
Incubation: Unrecorded
Young: Both adults feed the young. Faecal material is eaten or carried off.
