Distribution: Guinea-Bissan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Sudan, Ethiopia, Angola, Zaire, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and NW of Tanzania.

Status: Resident.

Habitat: Inhabits clearings and edges of forests, edges of cultivation, riverine woods and wooded grasslands.

General habits: Not conspicuous as it prefers dark interior of trees. Three to four birds roost together in cavities.

Feeding habits: Forages diversely, including flycatching. Its diet consists of figs, cultivated fruits and insects. It disgorges pellets.

Breeding habits: They are territorial birds with large territories. Both members of a pair excavate the nest cavity.
Egg laying: Timing of egg laying varies depending on the region.
Nest: The cavity is excavated between 2 and 20m high in a dead tree or stub.
Eggs: 2 -4 white eggs are laid.
Incubation: Approximately 13 days. Both adults incubate the eggs.
Young: Helpers assist the parents in feeding the young and also remove the faecal matter.
