Marks and his family on a visit to England. From left to right are Girlie (b. 1889), Joe (b. 1892), Dolly (b. 1897), Sammy, Louis (b. 1885), Bertha and Phil (b. 1900). Ted (b. 1894) is absent.

Being limited in his own schooling, he greatly valued book-learning and the children were taught at home by governesses, boys until the age of eight, girls until the age of twelve and then they were sent to England to private schools, as he was determined that they should receive the best schooling his money could buy.

Marks enjoyed the company of children and in later years he expressed profound regret for missing a large part of the childhood of his own offspring.

Forty years old and already a very wealthy man, Sammy decided it was time to get married. He returned to Sheffield in England and married his young bride Bertha Guttmann, nineteen years his junior. Out of this union nine children were born, six boys and three girls. His family was always of great concern to him.

This is the last known picture of the Marks family together. It was taken shortly before Marks's death in 1920. From left to right are Phil, Girlie, Joe, Louis, Ted and Dolly with Sammy and Bertha seated in front.
